Why Is This Unique?
Jasper is a compact sedimentary material – an opaque variety of chalcedony that is chosen for its beautiful color, pattern or appearance when cutting is done. While picture jasper can be found all over the world, specific colors or patterns are unique to the geographic region from which they originate. Starry Night Jasper comes from only one mine, west of the town of McDermott, Oregon.  This area is a 20 mile long caldera that long ago was covered with volcanic ash. The material is named as such because it resembled Van Gogh's masterpiece and because of its wonderful scenic landscapes of blue and browns.
