Why Is This Unique?
This is one of the most exceptional pieces of landscape jasper you can find. Its clarity of imagery and range of colors and detail are unprecedented. This particularly fine example of Deschutes Jasper, from Oregon, comes from the personal collection of the late Hoot Elkins, who was the original miner of the material in the 1960's. He collected and hoarded many stones, consequently amassing copious fantastic specimens. Yogo Sapphires are the most gem-quality sapphires found in North America and were first found in Montana in 1865 by early gold prospectors mining the Missouri river near Helena. Sapphires from Montana are unique in that they naturally occur in light pastels, unique blue-greens, and smoky grays. These unique gems are found only in a limited area named Yogo Gulch, located in the Little Belt Mountains of Montana. A majority of natural Montana sapphires will be under 1ct with the majority under 1/2ct, and a very limited supply of the sapphires are over 1ct, which makes the stone substantially more expensive per carat.
